How to Apply to College
Step OneSubmit your college application online on the college’s website, www.commonapp.org, or http://www.coalitionforcollegeaccess.org/
Read over the application requirements thoroughly and check deadlines! Make sure you have submitted all that is required, such as essays, application fees, etc. This checklist can help keep you organized. This spreadsheet can help you keep track of your logins, usernames, passwords, deadlines and track items for college applications and scholarships. |
Step TwoIf required, request your SAT and/or ACT scores be sent to each college. Official scores must be sent directly from Collegeboard or ACT. Plant does not send test scores to colleges. Scores can take 2-4 weeks to get to the college so request EARLY!
Note: Please be mindful of college policies: some may allow you to self-report your test scores or omit test scores altogether. Read admissions websites thoroughly. |
Step ThreeRequest your transcript to be sent on Naviance. For more information on how to request your transcript, please visit our transcripts page. Transcripts should not be sent more than a month before you submit the application.
Most applications will be complete after STEPS 1-3. Only some colleges require recommendations. Research requirements on each college's website BEFORE requesting a recommendation. |
Step FourCheck your application status on the college's admissions website to make sure all required materials have been received. Check your email for information on setting up your unique college usernames and passwords (make sure you check your junk folder if you do not receive it). Keep track of this information on your spreadsheet.
Do this for EVERY college! |
Here are some tips for navigating the college admissions process:
- All college applications to four year colleges and universities should be completed during the 1st semester (for priority decisions and scholarship consideration).
- Submit applications even if you are waiting to take a fall SAT or ACT. Colleges will recognize when you have updated scores sent in. Make sure you have at least one test score sent to the college by their deadline.
- There is no such thing as “one perfect school” or a “sure bet,” so make sure you apply to a variety of colleges.
- Submit only what is required by the college. Do not be overzealous by sending more recommendations than required.
- PROOFREAD the application before submitting online.
- Brush up on your college vocabulary. Make sure you know the difference between early action and early decision. For a list of common college terms, click here.
